I am sorry to have to report that Capenhurst Tower Captain Syd Roberts passed away this afternoon (Tuesday 2nd December).

In informing me of this sad news, Frank Parry said that Syd had never regained consciousness following the heart attack he suffered whilst in hospital having been admitted last Thursday, 29th November, with pneumonia.

We have now been advised that the funeral will be held on Wednesday 10th December 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity, Capenhurst. This would have been Syd's 84th birthday. For the present we are not aware of any ringing arrangements at the funeral but a Quarter Peal was rung at Burton on Friday afternoon with Syd's son, Richard Roberts, and daughter, Catherine Freeman, both in the band.

UPDATE OF 5 DECEMBER

Regarding the ringing arrangements for the funeral, Richard and Catherine extend an invitation to ALL ringers to join them in the open ringing (from 12:50 p.m.) before the funeral service next Wednesday (see above). Anyone available after the service is also welcome to ring. Details of the circumstances surrounding Syd's short period in hospital were inadvertently mis-reported. These have now been corrected (see bold text in para 2 above).
